Relaxed Glamour for the Family

Practical Luxury

The REstyleSOURCE team loves to see a great family space done right, so when we found this chic-but-livable home by Des Moines-based designer Meghan Blum, we knew we'd found a gem! Checking in with the designer (the main creative force behind Meghan Blum Interiors), we learned that the project was a new construction, custom build for an active young family. "They planned this home for many years," says Meghan, "so it was important that it not only be beautiful but also functional and most importantly, a great place to raise a family." The home, which blends plenty of soft upholstery (including lots of gorgeous seating options by REstyle fave LEE Industries) with lively prints and a muted but still playful palette, is a perfect mix of practicality with touches of elegance. Beauty meets function? We'd say they nailed it! Read on for more designer notes from Meghan and links to shop this look for yourself!

"I love how the family room turned out! It is polished and refined, but the use of color is fun for a young family. It’s a space that is full of life and just makes you feel happy!"

Designer Notes: Keeping It Balanced

“The great room in this house is very spacious with high ceilings. The windows are beautifully trimmed, but tend to exaggerate the height of the fireplace. The solution? We counter-balanced these oversized elements with large artwork over the chests and tall wingback chairs by the fireplace to compliment the architectural features, rather than working against them.”

"The colorful pillow fabric on the sectional was a jumping-off point for the color and direction in this space."

“The kitchen was designed with special details in mind for how the family would use the space and sit together. Fun details include the extra seating on the back side of the kitchen island, which meant they could sit together as a family instead of in a row. The middle prep island was also designed to be taller than usual. The husband does most of the cooking specifically chopping so it was important to be the perfect height for him to work. These are just a few of the fun details that you incorporate when building a custom really becomes a home designed around your specifications!”
