A Velvet Touch

Dressing Up the Holidays

Contributed by Kelle Ann McCarter of DesignsGirl Calligraphy

Dress up the holidays a little bit more this year by using some rich fabrics to embellish your Christmas accents and decor! Known as the fabric of nobility, velvet’s luxurious texture lends an ornate and rich accent to holiday decorations. Add a strike of red velvet ribbon to complete a gift wrapped package, or even decorate a gift with a velvet ornament to elevate the presentation to the next level. Take a tufted silken red velvet pumpkin and turn it into an elegant place card. For an easy DIY project, wrap velvet fabric around a styrofoam cone to create a beautiful Christmas card stand or tree. Finally, to celebrate the guests at your holiday gathering, design a special corsage or boutonniere with, of course, red or gold velvet ribbon and velvety red coxcomb flowers. All of these simple little velvet details can all contribute to a special and memorable Christmas for you and your guests.

Decorating Tip

For an extra special holiday touch, don’t forget to seek out rich textures like velvet in traditional Christmas colors. There is something so beautiful and special about snowy whites, rich holly berry reds, and Christmas tree greens. Shop at your local craft and fabric stores to find some velvet ribbon or fabric to embellish things like wreaths, window candles, and even your Christmas tree with a simple bow in a traditional holiday color to give it a velvet touch.
