Interview with Stan Topol of Stan Topol & Associates

Introducing the next in our series of Designer Spotlights focusing on the group of top national designers who will be featured at AmericasMart’s Portman White Vignette Gallery…..Stan Topol! Stan is an Atlanta-area designer whose impressive career has included heading the Interior Design program at the Art Institute of Atlanta, as well as founding and serving as lead designer of the award winning design firm of Stan Topol & Associates since the mid 1970s. REstyleSOURCE sat down for a brief Q & A with the engaging Stan, to get to know his background and to introduce a little of his design philosophy to our readers…

How did you get started in the world of interior design? I was fortunate to have the privilege to work with (American design legend) Billy Baldwin in New York City. Billy liked the fact that I had a degree in fine art; he always believed, as I do now, that a designer is really a decorator who enhances the lives of those he touches.

What was the inspiration behind your Portman White design vignette? Mr. Portman himself is the inspiration: understatement with style. The color Portman White and AmericasMart also served as inspirations. Portman White is one of the few whites that gives you a comfortable feeling, since it is not a harsh white and not one that reflects other colors.  This makes it a great choice for walls, ceilings, and even trim. In my vignette, there is not one piece that isn’t coming from AmericasMart.  I love to try new showrooms and then move into all the buildings and bring various facets from all over the Mart into my space and still keep it minimal.

STStan’s Design Advice? Feel Those Florals!

“At home, always look for the best floral touches you can add.  They need to feel a part of the environment – not stand out.”

Do you have any other favorite design advice for us? When I hang an entire wall of art objects the negative space, the space between the objects, is as important to my visual experience as the objects themselves. This is the way I can spot the difference between a pro in our business and someone who reads too many design books. Remember, there were many other decorators in our past, including Leonardo da Vinci, who understood proportion and style without simply being “stylish” for that moment.

Designing with white can be the ultimate challenge! What are some tips or hints to keep in mind when designing in an all-or-mostly white palette? Always keep the tint consistent in your whites and be careful how you accent the space with colors. White, like Portman White, gives us the ability to think carefully about additional coloring. In fact, if you think about it, does everyone look good wearing the same color? Not on your life!

Stan on visiting AmericasMart Atlanta

“The insider tip that always works for me is to be always looking for something new.  While doing that, you never know what else you might run into.  Good training, a good education, and a little bit of luck and you can ‘rule’ the Mart!”
