Interview with Shaun Smith of Shaun Smith Home

Introducing the next in our series of Designer Spotlights focusing on the group of top design experts who will be featured at AmericasMart’s Pantone Palette Exhibition…Shaun Smith! Shaun is the creative force behind a full service design firm, lifestyle brand and shopping destination by the same name on historic Magazine Street in New Orleans, LA. Known for his collected, clean yet classic aesthetic, Shaun Smith Home is an ever-changing amalgamation of styles, objects, antiques, vintage finds and rare curiosities. REstyleSOURCE recently chatted with Shaun, in a brief Q&A which will not only give our readers some background on his design philosophy, but also what they can expect to see from his Pantone Palette vignette at AmericasMart Atlanta in January 2016…

Shaun’s design aesthetic in three adjectives…”Clean, Collected, Classic.”

“I am most inspired by other designers. I believe that what we learn from the masters of design we are able to take–adding our own pieces of where we are & and what we love–and create a tribute to the past and something new that is truly ours as designers.”

What is the inspiration behind your Pantone vignette? The wallpaper from Schumacher that I’m using was the jumping off point for my vignette. It’s the perfect green, which will pull the “Dichotomy” palette completely together.

Tell us more about what will go into your Pantone vignette! How did you decide which palette to build your design on? Which pieces are your favorites, and why? Dichotomy’s palette of greens and purples was perfect for me because I am currently renovating my own home and each color is practically living somewhere in my house. I am actually using the same LEE Industries sofa I just ordered for my own home in my space. I am also obsessed with the tables from Modern History, and I found the perfect pendant from Currey.

“I never miss Mr. Brown (shown at left), the new showroom is to die for–I recently got a sneak peek! I am also a sucker for the Christopher Radko showroom.”

Designer Tips on Shopping the Market?

“Starbucks is key, and thankfully, there is one in the lobby! However, start with your must-sees and work from there. Make sure you take the time to just walk around and visit showrooms you have never seen. I always find something new that I can use in my world.”

Jessica LangeTell us one thing that would make for a perfect evening at home…?  Wine…I am from New Orleans, after all.

Any favorite entertaining tips for us? Pull greenery from your garden or yard for the table. Some of my favorite tabletop floral arrangements have come from there, and they don’t cost a dollar.

Who would you pick as a ‘dream client’, if you could choose anyone…?  Oddly enough, I have always been a huge Jessica Lange fan…and this summer she hired me!
