Seaside Palette

Casual Coastal Elegance

Casual and coastally-inspired yet still elegant, light and fresh but featuring vivid pops of color, this northwestern Florida vacation home designed by Georgia Carlee of GCI Design manages several of these balancing acts in perfect style. With room upon room of soft, inviting layers of textiles and upholstered furniture, this seaside palette home inspires comfort and makes “getting away from it all” easy as can be….really, we think the only difficult thing might just be giving it up for the summer, when vacation season ends. Georgia designed this coastal getaway (originally featured in Traditional Home magazine) for a family from land-locked Ohio who had fallen in love with the small seaside towns of Florida many years before and been vacationing there ever since–in fact, this is Georgia’s third home design project for the same family! Obviously, a style match made in heaven.

Personal details help to make the space feel like a true home, and they pop up everywhere in this charming vacation property. Whether it’s the owner’s beloved dog (Nelly, one of a pair of French bulldogs) or a collection of shadowboxed seashells that made the move from the family’s previous home, every nook and corner of this space feels authentically inspired by the people who live in & love it.

Tricolored curtain panels help to soften the space and diffuse the sunny glow from large windows, and the “earth, sea & sky” inspired colors perfectly echo the palette found not only within the house, but outside it as well.

The same curtain panels can be seen in the office nook above, although we know that if we were the ones vacationing in this beautiful home, that desk (from Four Hands, see sources at right) wouldn’t see much “work” done all summer long–aside from writing the occasional postcard! Instead, a collection of hooks installed next to the outside door perfectly describes the activities that would be sure to take place instead: hats for gardening and sunbathing, leashes for dog walking, canvas totes for farmer’s market shopping, and so on.

Natural materials abound throughout this space, from classic wide-plank wood floors to the shell hanging lights and rattan counter stools at the kitchen island. A woven seagrass rug provides a natural anchor for the dining room, which includes upholstered chairs and banquette pillows from LEE Industries and woven cane dining chairs from Palecek, under an oversized statement chandelier created from nautically-inspired rope. Natural coral decor from Jamie Dietrich Designs helps to complete the sense of bringing the outdoors in.

Every bedroom features more soft layers of textiles that inspire relaxation at every time of day, whether it’s a breakfast cup of coffee or tea in one of the upholstered wicker chairs on the the screened porch, settling in for the afternoon in a soft swivel chair by LEE, or curling up next to a cozy upholstered headboard by Legacy Home before bedtime. Every inch of this charming vacation getaway is about comfort, as it should be.
