Interview with Michelle Mancuso of Samantha Drew Interiors

When did you open your store? I opened Samantha Drew in the spring of 2002. Our original location was just west of our current East Setauket store, in St. James.

How did you get started in the business? As a child, I would re-arrange my parents furniture and redecorate my bedroom – I often say I was born to do this!

What do you love about owning the shop? Working creatively and getting to know our clients so we can help they achieve the beautiful space they’ve dreamed of.

Where did the name Samantha Drew Interiors come from? My daughter Samantha Drew, was born the year I decided to open my own business.

What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of the business? As a mother, wife and business owner, the greatest challenge of all is balancing work and life.

“The holidays are our favorite time of year, and with them comes many events at our store and in our town. We look forward to our ‘Sparkle and Shine’ event held yearly in December, and we offer Champagne Shopping starting after Thanksgiving & continue until Christmas Eve! Our town also hosts a house tour, which takes people on a tour of decorated homes for the holidays.”

Their favorite party tip?

Keep it simple, and have a designated party closet. I store away items that don’t stay out all the time. I use everyday items, things that can be used year round, and add seasonal elements by using what is currently outdoors – wood, greens, flowers and fern.

Do you have any favorite pieces in the store right now? Yes! All of them!

What is your favorite quote? ‘This is the best life I’ve ever had!’ my daughter had said this when she was 4 years old while eating an ice cream cone in the Hamptons. I’ve never forgotten those words and that moment!

What is something you have learned in the business that you didn’t expect? When you start a business, you initially believe you can do it all – but over time, you learn that collaboration is actually the key to success!

What items are your best sellers? Anything by Lee Industries. Their craftsmanship speaks volumes, and our clients especially appreciate that they are family owned and operated in the United States.

What inspires you? So many things; my family. A day on the boat spent with friends. A stroll down a Manhattan street. A drive through the Hamptons in the fall. I am very blessed to have so many amazing people in my life.

What is the importance of customer service; what results you have seen from going the extra mile for your customers or employees? Having a hospitality background, I take great pleasure in serving my clients; I get a deep joy from making them happy.

We are beyond fortunate to have a wonderful, eclectic group of women at Samantha Drew Interiors. Everyone brings something different to the table and we all work beautifully together; it’s a pleasure coming to work everyday!

Do you have a favorite customer story? Yes! A client called us up 10 days before they were about to host a wedding in their home, and requested that all of their upholstery be slip covered in white. Needless to say, all hands were on deck, and we successfully pulled off their request in time for the big event!

Are there any restaurants or shops in the area that you like to visit? A favorite neighborhood lunch spot perhaps? Being a foodie, we have many great places to eat at. For breakfast, we love Crazy Beans in Stony Brook for their delicious breakfast and specialty coffee. At lunch, there is no better place to get a sandwich or wrap than Tiger Lily in Port Jefferson. At the end of a long day, dinner at Pentimento (also in Stony Brook) is a perfect place to grab a delicious bite and good drink! For shopping, we can think of no sweeter spot than the children’s clothing store Eloise and Oliver. Owner Christina Bohn stocks the dreamiest outfits and gifts for little ones, while the greenhouse space works as her photography studio. It’s a wonderful space to pop into during the day.
