SHARING SLIPCOVERED STORIES
PHOTOS COURTESY OF WHERE WOMEN CREATE MAGAZINE
The world owes Rachel Ashwell a bow of thanks. She taught us about slipcovers, over-stuffed sofas, and comfort galore — and that shabby can be chic, indeed.
The self-proclaimed dreamer frequented flea markets with her parents as a child and learned to appreciate the patina and beauty of old things. She became a stylist in L.A. before opening her first shop in Santa Monica in the late ‘80s.
“Before 1989, your choices were to hire an interior designer or use the Sears catalogue,” says Ashwell. Her store brought a refreshing aesthetic to mainstream America. Tea-stained linens and flea market inspirations brought a comfortable, pretty, and approachable feel to home décor. In the Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture universe, old mixes with new, chipped paint is art, and everyone is invited to stay for awhile.
Tips from Rachel
“My pet peeves are too much matching, clutter, and frills, and people being too quick to complete the decorating process. The solution is to simplify. Be without, rather than making a wrong quick choice. Less is more.”
“I am endlessly looking at things that contain either obvious or hidden inspiration and pulling it out to make a story. I’m not inventing anything; I’m merely putting together stories. „
There are 3 flagship Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture stores in London, Los Angeles, and New York, and a showroom at The Prairie by Rachel Ashwell in Round Top, Texas. In addition Rachel has authored seven books and has recently completed her eighth ‘Rachel Ashwell Couture Prairie and Fleamarket Finds’ due out in September.
