KariAnne of Thistlewood Farms got a little help from Debbie over at Painted Therapy to recreate her painted stairwell runner onto her front porch. With just $40, she created a subtle and welcoming addition to her porch.

Materials and tools needed

  • concrete paint
  • frog tape
  • pencil
  • measuring tape
  • paint brush

  1. Paint porch and steps with base paint. Let dry.
  2. Determine how wide you want the runner to be. KariAnne started hers 2 feet in from each side. She used a simple trick of laying 3 strips of painters tape in a row, and removing the middle strip for a perfectly spaced line.
  3. Paint the taped-off steps with your runner color. See the hint for a perfect paint line below.
  4. While paint is still wet, pull the tape slowly towards you for a clean, crisp edge.

Use Debbie’s trick of painting the base color of the stairs / steps around the tape and allowing to dry before applying the layer of color. The base coat will prevent the new color from leaking under the tape. Brilliant!
