Party with Cakes and Cactus by Jenny Cookies

Deserts + Desserts = The Perfect Party

We love all things Jenny Cookies here at REstyleSOURCE….who wouldn’t? This talented blogger’s parties are pure inspiration gold! When we learned that she was hosting a cactus-themed gathering, we knew right away that it was one we’d have to feature, and once you see her photogenic spread of succulent-inspired desserts and sweet DIY terrarium craft table, we know you’ll agree. The combination of a desert + dessert theme is a match made in party heaven! If you’re looking for one last summer celebration to kick off Labor Day Weekend and end the summer in style, look no further: all the inspiration you need, including photos, links and even a spread of party recipes, is below!

Jenny says, “I wanted to gather my girlfriends to celebrate with a special lunch at my home. Plus, I’ve been dying for a reason to throw a cactus-themed party, so it was a win win. To get my deck ‘party ready,’ I added coordinating pillows to my outdoor furniture.” Jenny used printed cactus fabric to make pillow covers, then mixed in custom “cactus definition” pillows from So Vintage Chic with solid green and black and white striped pillows she already had. This makes an amazing statement for an outdoor party, and would be easy to pull off on your own porch! Look for pillows in desert-inspired colors and fabrics, along with a bold punch here and there of graphic black & white.

We’re All About That Cake

Fresh Floral CakeJenny says, “Since there were only four of us, there was no need for a full dessert spread.  I made a simple naked cake topped with succulents and greenery.” We think the unexpected pops of organic green on top of this sweet & simple cake are just right. Never made a “naked” cake before? REstyleSOURCE has a great tutorial for making an easy cake that’s light on frosting but delivers big-time on flavor and fresh florals (substitute any kind of succulents or greenery you like on top)… to see our Fresh Floral Cake!

Jenny’s lunchtime party also included a delicious-sounding spread of taco salads with fresh guacamole, sauteed peppers, corn, ground chicken and a splash of lime. For suggestions that go beyond the dessert table–although it’s hard not to focus on those sweet treats when they’re also so beautiful–see the links at the end of this feature for a fiesta-inspired feast of your own!

“No party is complete without sugar cookies!  These cactus cookies were SO simple to make using my latest buttercream dipping technique.”

After refreshments, it’s time to get down to some serious DIY business. Jenny says, “Once everyone ate, we worked our way over to my outdoor dining table where I had prepared everything we needed to make DIY Terrariums. I ordered a huge variety of cactus and succulents from San Pedro Cactus on Etsy.  Who knew you could order cactus on Etsy?!  Now you know.  And it’s much more affordable than purchasing at a big box home improvement store, like a fraction of the price. I purchased cute glass terrariums ahead of time, and had these and all the other supplies laid out and ready to assemble.  I gave everyone a quick terrarium tutorial and we got to work!”

DIY Desert Under Glass

DIY TerrariumThe DIY terrarium trend is one classic that we’d be happy to see come around again and again. It’s always a great idea to add a touch of organic greenery to your decor, and whether your look is traditional Americana or modern Scandinavian minimalism, these simple glass terrariums are truly a trend for all seasons (and styles). The best part is, they couldn’t be simpler to make! REstyleSOURCE has an easy-to-follow tutorial (DIY Geometric Terrarium) for first time terrarium-makers, so click to get started on your very own miniature oasis!

“I love having an activity when I host parties.  It’s so relaxing and fun to work on something while you chat!”

“They turned out way cuter than I ever imagined.  I absolutely love mine!  My love for cactus and succulents just grew three times larger.  These are the easiest plants to care for AND they make the cutest gifts!”

Seattle, WA

I’m Jenny Keller, a self taught baker, blogger, author, and stylist who is crazy passionate for throwing over the top parties, on a diet fueled with buttercream icing and way too much Fresca.  I work with brides, products and brands, celebrities and often my own two children to create one-of-a-kind celebrations, desserts and decor that will be remembered for years to come. Not surprising as a Seattle native, I owned and operated a successful coffee business until my first baby was born.  I quickly lost interest in grinding coffee beans and became enamored with creative baking and party planning, ensuring every single holiday, big or small, made an impression on my babes.  Fast forward 8 years and here I am.  I’ve decorated more sugar cookies than I could ever count and have commemorated the majority of life’s littlest occasions with cake plates filled with cupcakes, cookies, and most likely a coordinating bunting banner or tassel garland.
