A Perfect Partnership

When a mutual friend introduced Stacy Sullivan of The New Old House Co. to Mary McElroy of Traditions four years ago, he triggered a partnership that has so far resulted in the creation of three stunning elegant and welcoming homes. Traditions, a purveyor of classic home furnishings and whimsical accessories, provides the furniture to stage new homes created by Minneapolis-based The New Old House Co., who specialize in building new homes with old house charm. Their latest collaboration is Park Place, a 5200+ square foot Cape Cod home inspired by the Hamptons, which features upholstered furniture by LEE Industries throughout the space and demonstrates how the two talented women work beautifully together to create both inspired and inspiring results.

Tell us about Park Place…. STACY: At the beginning of every new project, I meet with the architect to discuss my vision for the home. We discuss everything from architectural style, room sizes and layout to the way a family will live in the space and the overall feel I’d like to achieve. Right away I knew I wanted a Hamptons, ‘coastal’ feel for Park Place, with a very welcoming, laid-back-yet-elegant style. That influence plays into every aspect of the home: large windows and French doors, white custom cabinetry and woodwork, subtle paint colors with sea grass and designer wallpapers to add texture and of course, the furnishings. We needed large signature pieces that would also be practical for a family. Mary and I met as soon as Park Place was framed so I could share my vision. At that point, we walked through the home, took precise measurements and Mary started sourcing  the furniture pieces.

So at what point in the building process do you make furniture decisions?  STACY: I’m already thinking about the furniture when we start talking to our architect about the floor plan, but it really starts taking shape once the home is framed. That’s when I first meet with Mary.

MARY: I love being involved from such an early stage in the process, and it really helps with planning. It’s critical to get the flow and feel of the overall space right.

Can you walk us through the design process?  STACY: We go room by room and map out furniture for each room. For example, in the library at Park Place I envisioned 4 chairs. Mary, knowing the aesthetic that I was going for, was able to translate that idea and came up with the beautiful LEE Industries chairs.

MARY: Once I meet with Stacy, I create floor plan options taking into account Stacy’s design sense and how the future homeowners will use the space. After researching the pieces and pulling the looks together, I present my ideas to Stacy, who then gives her seal of approval or we look for different options.

What were your design needs for Park Place?  STACY:  For Park Place, I wanted to have a more coastal-inspired feel that reminded people of the Hamptons. Family Friendly. Distressed woods. Soft palette. A very casual feel, so finding the right furnishings was key. And most importantly, I wanted it to feel lived in and real – not staged. Mary was very easily able to source what I envisioned and add a layer of product that fit a more casual lifestyle.

MARY: The casual, organic nature of LEE Industries products were the perfect fit for this home. With a slipcover program and a ton of great user-friendly fabrics to choose from, they offer casual elegance at an affordable price point. Their products are a great solution for budget-minded clients who want a functional space and classic look.

How was Moving Day?  MARY: Once Park Place was close to completed, it was time for the fun part – installation. Move-in day is really exciting, two giant trucks pull up to the home and we get to see the pieces in place and a home start to take shape.

And then you’re done……right?  STACY: Ha! Not quite! It’s only when we get the furniture in the home that we can see if everything works perfectly in the space. We’ll switch out chairs, re-order new pieces. And then we’ll start layering, making it feel like a home–rather than a staged model home–and put the house together with accessories from Traditions and other retailers.

What is your favorite room in the house?  MARY: I really love how the master bedroom turned out. We were going for a soft and inviting look. The LEE upholstered King bed turned out beautifully, paired with a cozy side chair to curl up in and read a good book!

What does it mean to Traditions to have its furniture displayed in a home this way?  MARY: It’s like having a beautiful pop-up shop, or an extension to our showroom. We are able to show a different style than what we show in our stores. It also gives us a chance to show a complete look rather than the more eclectic nature of our stores. We usually sell at least 2-3 rooms of furniture when all said and done to the new homeowner. The remaining product is usually sold before it gets back to our warehouse to other clients that were able to visit the model house.

And what does it mean to The New Old House Co. to partner with Traditions?  STACY: It’s amazing to have access to such quality, beautiful furniture and to have a dedicated partner in Mary who is so professional and really understands our homes, our buyers and our style.

The collaborations between Mary and Stacy and the beautiful results of their partnership really demonstrate the power and impact of buying and working local–a concept also embodied by their favorite brand partner, LEE Industries. When two successful ventures such as Traditions and The New Old House Co. team up with a keen understanding of the clientele in the area, they have the ability to tap into what their excites their customer base most. The work of Mary McElroy and Stacy Sullivan continues to impress customers and future homebuyers alike, and it’s certain they will for years to come! Look for many beautiful future projects from these two creative powerhouses.
