Columbus, Ohio

On Paper is one of those tucked away gems that you hope to stumble across while visiting a new city. As an award-winning retailer, now in their 17th year, they have the largest variety and selection of specialty paper and stationery in Columbus, Ohio. They have been dedicated to the long lost art of handwritten communication since August of 1997, as a means of not only self-expression, but personal enjoyment and meditation as well. On Paper has been a beacon of hope in this ever-increasing digital age, by bringing in pedestrians from all over the city to come and peruse their lovely assortment of elegant stationary, artisan printing, wedding invitations, and other assorted vintage inspired goods.

Q: When did you open your store?
Joan Schnee: August 1997

Q: How did you get started in the business?
JS: Papermaking and mixed media collage were my hobbies, and I always loved to send and receive cards, especially from artist friends who would make them by hand. Before opening On Paper, I worked in retail as a store designer and Visual Merchandising executive. I had a really strong foundation in marketing, how to properly merchandise a store, and a keen sense of trend. This gave me the tools to take a plunge and embark on my own business. I feel I had a pretty realistic expectation of how it would be. I knew that it would not be glamorous, but I also knew that it would be tremendously rewarding. And indeed, both have proven to be true.

Q: What do you love about owning your shop?
JS: I love the creativity of being a buyer- curating from a vast range of possibilities  and selecting what I think will be perfect for On Paper. Creating a space that people love to visit and to be able to feature amazingly talented card artists, invitation designers, jewelers, and product designers is an honor.

Q: What items are your best sellers?
JS: Cards, cards, cards! Ohio themed jewelry that we have made for us Tiny silver initial charm necklaces, Lollia Shea butter hand cream, Vintage style maps, and, of course, wedding invitations!

Q: What inspires you?
JS: Great graphics, a fantastic font, beautiful calligraphy. Textured surfaces and antique finishes (our entire store is heavily distressed antiques), rustic ephemera- things with a history, and believe it or not- a REALLY stark, super modern interior- all white.

Q: What is your favorite quote?
JS: What goes around comes around. If you do something nice, it comes back to  you tenfold. I have seen it to be true, over and over again.

Q: Are there any other tidbits you would like for us to include in this feature?
JS: In addition to owning On Paper, I founded a recycled paper company called  Green Paper Company. It produces envelopes and card stock, stationery industry  basics that are incredibly eco-friendly and incredibly high quality. Our papers are sold in select retail stores, and sold on a wholesale basis to many talented invitation and card designers throughout the country.
