BARBERSHOP CHIC IN VICTORIA, BC

WRITTEN BY JAIMEE ROSE     *     PHOTOS BY STUDIO 1079

In downtown Victoria, just off stylish lower Johnson Street, there exists a barbershop too beautiful to let the men have it all to themselves. At Victory Barber and Brand, vintage typewriters and leather stools keep company with artisan shaving brushes, industrial shelving and subway tile galore.
Event designer Erica Smolders of Rook & Rose Floral Boutique admired the space each time she passed, and finally decided she couldn’t resist: it was time for a co-ed mustache party in her neighbors’ shop.
“It’s such a beautiful space to be in,” says Smolders, “so we worked with that they already had. Almost everything that you see was already there: the collection of vintage typewriters, all those gorgeous men’s products, the barber chairs.”
She and her cohorts added flowers, friends, a whiskey bar and some vintage suitcases.
They stayed up all night making mustache cookies, she says, and fashioned a cake out of mustache paper.
We say the Victory gentlemen should always be so lucky.

TIPS

Scour your local antique store to find the best styling props. Vintage suitcases and wooden crates make fun props. Look for vintage crystal decanters at the local flea market and fill with a selection of spirits to encourage tasting. Wrap a simple cylinder vase with twine for a little added detail to your floral arrangement.
