Modern Spanish Revival by Amanda Barnes Interiors

Family-Friendly Style

Designed by Amanda Barnes Interiors, this Spanish-style charmer was recently given a fresh redesign both inside and outside by the San Francisco-based designer. Amanda wanted to do justice to the fantastic, Mediterranean-inspired lines of this older home, which had already weathered several previous renovations, while keeping its original charm. We love that she managed to preserve its vintage character while infusing it with fresh, bright modernism and a healthy dose of family-friendly comfort–perfect for a family with two young children! Amanda says, “I was inspired by the textiles found in old Spanish homes. I also love the use of tile in this era and tried to incorporate a fair amount of it using a muted palette that matched the modern vibe of the home.” We chatted with the designer for even more details about this Spanish stunner…read on for more from Amanda, as well as our collection of REstyle Picks from brands we love that are based on this look!

This 1926 Spanish revival home has survived a few previous renovations. As a result, it was missing the original features you would expect to find in something from this period. The goal with this project was to infuse the old charm back into the spaces while meeting the needs of a young, modern family.

kitchenDesigner Notes: Favorite Things

Designer Amanda Barnes says:

“One of my favorite things about this project is the way the kitchen came out. We tore down the wall between the kitchen and family room and raised the floor in the kitchen to make both rooms the same level. We rotated the direction of the kitchen from facing the backyard to facing the family room. Now Mom and Dad can be cooking together in one room and still keep their eyes on the kids playing. Thanks to this clever redesign, cooking and playing can happen simultaneously. It also makes entertaining dinner guests much easier since the chef can now talk to her guests rather than be isolated in the previously walled-off kitchen.”

“By making a few changes to the layout we encouraged conversation between two separate spaces. While its very functional, this kitchen is also a stunner. My clients opted for a timeless white space with floor to ceiling storage and white marble. A paneled wine fridge, two sinks and two dishwashers make this kitchen a dream for entertaining!”

This young family has an infant and a toddler. It was important to them that the space be both beautiful and practical. The fabrics we chose had to be durable and survive the occasional crayon mishap but also be suitable for entertaining guests.

In the everyday living spaces, we avoided porous elements and the white marble is treated with a proprietary sealer that makes it extremely durable. We kept the palette muted and layered in textures that helped build a warm and cozy space for everyday living.

Designer Notes: Color Palette

Amanda chose a sophisticated palette of Benjamin Moore colors to complement the architecture and furnishings of this project. Simply White helps to lighten & brighten the entryway and kitchen cabinets, while Edgecomb Gray provides a soft yet modern background for the living room. Finally, the cool, calming vibe of Deep Space adds a touch of sit-down glamour to the dining area.

This project was so much fun to work on. Redesigning the interior and exterior allowed us the opportunity to marry the landscaping with the interior decor and the outdoor living spaces with the flow of the home.

The end result is an updated Spanish Revival that combines modern day convenience with everyday luxury.
