Modern French Farmhouse by Fredette Morris Design

Q: Can you share a bit about this project, and where you drew inspiration from for the overall design?
Jennifer Morris: My husband’s firm, Morris Hullinger Design Build, designed and built this modern French farmhouse. It was not a custom home. We designed it with a particular design savvy client in mind, and were very lucky to sell it before we even put it on the market! The client who bought the home fell in love with it so much she insisted that we help her with the interior furnishings.

A contemporary French farmhouse, and our many buying trips to France inspired us in the design of this house. The kitchen wall tile, fireplaces, dining room stone wall, and many other materials throughout the home were brought back from our buying trip to France. The tile in the kitchen was the inspiration for our color palette (Steel blue, gray/beige, cream, etc.) that is used throughout the kitchen and in the great room. My client wanted a comfortable, timeless, but also design forward space where she could entertain.

Q: Can you tell us about the art piece?
JM: The art piece above the fireplace was bought specifically for this room and added a pop of color.  I also love the juxtaposition of the antique fireplace from France and the contemporary art.  This is a common theme throughout the house. The artist is Ralph Turturro, an accomplished abstract expressionist in NYC.

SHOP LOCALLY: Jennifer shared that she loves working with James Craig Furnishings in Houston Texas to source the best in home furnishings and accessories for her clients.

Q: Do you have any design tips you would like to share with our readers about how to achieve this look/style?
JM: Mix old and new pieces. Create a neutral palette with the main furniture fabrics (sofas, chairs) and add in pops of color and texture with pillows, art, and accessories. With a neutral palette it is also very important to add layers of different textures and materials, such as the gold metal lamp, small mohair ottomans, leather coffee table, suede chairs, and velvet sofa.

Keeping it in the Family

“My client had her grandmother’s beautiful chocolate fur coat turned into a throw, which became the perfect accessory for this room. Always add something special to you in your rooms!” – Jennifer Morris
