Interview with Meredith Ellis of Meredith Ellis Design

Welcome to a brand new series of Designer Spotlights, focusing on the group of top designers who will bring to life the Diamonds of Design Vignette Exhibition at AmericasMart beginning in January 2017. In celebration of AmericasMart’s sixtieth anniversary, this select group of designers will bring to life their most inspiring design moments, eras and lifestyles of the last 60 years using their favorite finds from the market. The next one of our designers to be featured is…Meredith Ellis! This dynamic designer spent over a decade honing her skills under the renowned Bunny Williams in New York City, Thomas Beeton in Los Angeles, and famed White House designer Michael Smith. In June of 2016, Meredith was selected as a “New Trad” designer by Traditional Home magazine, identifying her as one of the 10 most notable up-and-coming designers in the country. REstyleSOURCE recently chatted with Meredith, in a brief Q&A which will not only give our readers some background on her design philosophy, but also what they can expect to see from her Diamonds of Design Vignette at AmericasMart Atlanta in January…

How did you get started in the world of interior design? My mother was an Interior designer so I have been immersed in the design world since a very early age. I began my professional career in New York City 18 years ago when I took a job working for the renowned Bunny Williams. I held various positions within her firm and worked my way up slowly. After 5 years, I was ready to expand my education, so I relocated to Los Angeles where I worked as a Senior Designer for two separate design firms, first Thomas Beeton and then Michael Smith. I finally launched my own business in 2008.

What inspires your creativity? Travel and design books. However, I find the most important thing that fuels my creativity is getting out from behind my desk and immersing myself into the world around me. Nothing is more inspiring that touching, feeling, and experiencing. I love to drift through art galleries, flea markets, showrooms and shops, and funky restaurants . It really makes you aware of what’s out there … things that I find interesting whether it’s old or new.

OdLR circleDesigner Notes: Inspiration

Diamonds of Design will focus on style standouts of the last 60 years. Which design icon, style or era from the last 60 years particularly inspires you? I’ve always been inspired by Oscar De la Renta …. Not only his gorgeous women’s wear, which is classic and simply beautiful …. but his personal homes as well. I love that they are timeless, layered, and traditional.

What was the inspiration behind your vignette? Oscar De la Renta’s Dominican Republic home (seen at left) served as a major influence. Also, good, classic, livable design. I stuck to the basics, the things that never go out of style, and give a sense of worldly exposure: wicker, antiques, blue and white, hurricanes, grass rug, books, mixed in with a little bit of modern art.

Designer Tips on shopping the market?

“Go with a plan in mind. Have a list of what you are looking for and the showrooms you need to see first. Then use any free time for roaming and discovering what’s new.”

ME circleDesigner Notes…

On her favorite things? “When designing always use a combination of materials: wood, metal, antique, woven grass, etc. It allows the space to feel more collected, and not ‘decorated’.”

On creating a signature style? “I always like to have at least one antique in a room. It elevates the space and makes it feel authentic.”
