Map Decoupage Desk

A Fresh Start

Once a plain little desk used in the Texas school system, this vintage piece has been given new life with a few coats of paint and some decoupage skills. Using some gorgeous map paper, and Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® in Arles Yellow, this formerly simple little desk is now quite a show-stopping piece. Jamie of Kalology Studio, creator of this piece, was fortunate enough to find the desk in it’s original condition, which only added to it’s charm once she was finished with it. “It still had the original metal tags, and laminate top, which was peeling along the edge of the desk only. I decided to pull off the laminate along the sides, and incorporate the laminate top – the perfect art surface for kiddos – into the re-design.” Personally, we love the outcome. See full material list and instructions below – and get ready to decoupage!

I love the use of maps to give a worldly feel to vintage furniture, so I went to Paper Source and picked up a sheet of map paper to decoupage along the edge of the desk.

 Instructions:
  1. Adequately clean and wipe down furniture surface and allow to dry.
  2. Paint desired surfaces with enough coats of Chalk Paint® to cover the piece. Allow to dry.
  3. Seal painted surface with clear soft wax.
  4. Take your paper (or maps), and cover the areas that you would like to decoupage. If you are unsure of how much paper you will need, simply measure the section of the furniture that you would like to cover, and then cut a piece that is the proper size.
  5. Coat your decoupage areas in Annie Sloan’s Decoupage medium with an artist brush. It is water-based, so it rinses easily from the brush. Carefully apply your paper over your decoupage areas, being sure to overlap the paper to completely cover the edge.
  6. Seal the paper with 4-5 thin coats of the Decoupage.
