Interview with Mandy Kellogg Rye of Waiting on Martha

Welcome to our new series of Designer Spotlights, focusing on the group of top bloggers and designers who will bring to life the Vignette Gallery Exhibition at AmericasMart beginning in July 2017. This summer market, the theme of the exhibition looks ahead to 2018 with the theme “The Great Reset: Redefining How We Live, Design and Do Business.” A select group of creatives will explore four trend forecast themes using their favorite furnishings and accessories sourced from the market. The next one of our designers to be featured is…Mandy Kellogg Rye! Once a law school student with dreams of becoming a high-powered attorney, Mandy moved on from legal studies when she fell in love with design, and she has never looked back. Launching her acclaimed blog Waiting on Martha in 2012–recently named one of the Top Ten Entertaining Blogs by Better Homes & Gardens–Mandy has since expanded her reach to include editorial styling for national brands, interior styling and e-design, and a Waiting on Martha online shop encompassing all things home & gift-related. Style comes naturally to this Atlanta dweller, who says simply, “I wear black, decorate in color, and try to create a beautiful day every day.” REstyleSOURCE recently chatted with Mandy, in a brief Q&A which will not only give our readers some background on her design philosophy, but also what they can expect to see from her vignette at AmericasMart Atlanta in July…

How did you get started in the world of blogging? Which came first for you, blogging or interior design? Blogging came first. I’ve always had a deep love for interior design, but never planned on being a designer. I started Waiting on Martha as a creative outlet and wanted to share every area I’m passionate in: design, fashion, food, beauty, and wellness.

What inspires your creativity? Getting quiet. I have my best ideas when I’m in the shower actually. It’s one of the only places my mind can grow quiet enough to think and imagine freely. Besides that, travel. I’m constantly inspired by the way others live and create beauty in their life.

Enjoy circle

I love a good quote, and have plenty of quotes and philosophies I live by.  My top three would have to be:

“Work hard in silence and let your success be your noise.”

“Comparison is the thief of all joy.”

…and lastly, and most importantly:

“Stay close to anything that makes you glad you are alive.”

Designer Notes: Inspiration

Take a peek “behind the design” with some of Mandy’s “Earthed” vignette picks!

How will your vignette explore the “Earthed” theme?  I’ve always been drawn to design elements that add texture and interest to a space and lately I’ve found I’m craving more of a neutral and calmer palette which seemed perfect for the Earthed theme.  Of course my idea of being closer to the outdoors and infused with the Earth would be sitting in a garden in the french countryside drinking wine which will be similar to the vignette I’ll be creating.  Using beautiful blush and neutral tones I’ll be bringing Earthed to life with the use of various natural textures and patterns.  Think linens, woods, stone, natural minerals, geodes, rattan, and brass accents.  Not to mention I’m working closely with local artist Emily Pope Harris to truly bring the outside in.  Hopefully when I’m done my vignette will be a place anyone would feel comfortable relaxing and getting back to the simplicity, natural state of things.

2017 Trends in this Theme

Here are some trends the REstyle team has been tracking that we can’t wait to see expressed in this theme:

  • Matte finish
  • Natural irregularities
  • Wood, shell & other natural elements
  • Brass

Designer Tips on shopping the market?

“Make a plan and map it out.  AmericasMart is huge, and it’s easy to get lost–especially during market when thousands of buyers and designers are milling around.  It can all be a bit overwhelming, so it helps if you actually know where you’re going.  And avoid the elevators.  Start at either the top floor or the first floor and make your way up/down via the escalators.”

MKR barcart circleFinally, any style or entertaining tips for us?

“For entertaining; always overbuy on the booze and have a great playlist on hand.  When it comes to designing, don’t worry about trends or rules.  Surround yourself with items you love.”
