Lower Haight Victorian by Braun + Adams

A Family Home Gets a Style Refresh

This week we’re taking a look at a redesigned Victorian home by one of our favorite teams, Braun + Adams. Kristina Braun and Emily Adams, the design team behind this project, recently shared some details with us on this stunning update, done in their signature light, airy & contemporary style. “We recently completed this project for a sweet young family in the lower Haight neighborhood of San Francisco and wanted to share the transformation of their front room and master bedroom,” said Kristina and Emily. The front room was originally a combined office and guest bedroom, but since the family rarely hosted guests,  centering the room around a full-size bed meant wasted space.

Instead, the designers swapped the bed for a space-saving sleeper sofa and lightened up the room palette, creating a light-filled oasis for family & guests alike. “We capitalized on the great natural light and gorgeous period details to transform the room into a comfortable and airy sitting room, complete with built-in storage, a small desk, and sleeper sofa,” say the designers. The results are nothing short of magic! Read on for more details on this transformation and to see the finished master bedroom (see the dramatic ‘before’ images here and here on the designers’ blog)…and don’t forget to check out our REstyle Picks inspired by this look!

“Before the remodel, the room included a dark fireplace, a queen bed taking up floor space, and an improvised storage closet. We painted and re-tiled the fireplace in a marble herringbone, and designed built-ins flanking the fireplace with a combination of open shelves, an enclosed wardrobe, and small writing desk.”

Several areas in the home received a fresh coat of paint, including Benjamin Moore’s Horizon & Super White on the walls and trim of the from room, and the cool, sophisticated Steep Cliff Gray on the wardrobe in the master bedroom.

Are you loving this upholstered teal stunner as much as we are? Would you believe it’s a DIY project by the designers themselves? While Kristina and Emily usually source their design finds from some of our favorite brands (well hello there, JaipurWorlds Away and Global Views), sometimes they’ve just got to go for that special, one-of-a-kind piece that can’t be replicated anywhere else! In this case, the designers rescued a vintage armchair and had it reupholstered in lush Versailles Velvet by Kravet. It’s now the centerpiece of this gorgeous room redesign!

“The end result? A bright and colorful sitting room that can still serve as both the office and guest room!”

Designer Notes: Challenge Accepted!

“The other room we did for this lovely young family was the master bedroom.   The clients wanted this room to be light and bright like the front room, but it was on the opposite end of the house where there was less natural light streaming in.  There was a serious need to increase storage space while also upgrading the bed to a king, so we needed to maximize every inch of space. The one other main challenge in the room was finding a king headboard and nightstand combo that fit on the wall where they would be going.  We ended up using small scale nightstands that still add some extra storage.”

“Above the nightstands, we went with wall sconces to keep the small surface area from being taken over by lamps.”

Designer Notes: Another Amazing DIY

“One of the most impressive additions was a pre-fab wardrobe system that we completely made over for the space.  We had to go with a shallower frame to make it work in the space but it still added a significant amount of storage.  We gave it a fresh coat of gray paint and had custom mirrors cut to become insets on the upgraded doors.  The mirrors drastically lightened up both the darker color of the wardrobe and the room itself.  And of course, we had to finish it off with these glam brass bar pulls.”
