Interview with Kristen Forgione of The LifeStyled Company

With a personality as sunny as the Phoenix desert she lives and works in, Kristen Forgione’s positive outlook shines through in every styling project she takes on. Whether she’s embellishing a master bedroom, putting a colorful spin on a kids’ playroom or accenting a wedding reception with luxurious flourishes, Kristen’s projects exude a sense of ‘hand curated style to live by’ that we just can’t get enough of. Kristen shares her projects over at her site, The LifeStyled Company, and she shared with REstyleSOURCE a few of her inspiration sources for living a lovely, authentically styled life.

How did you get started in the styling business? I started my blog! Really! I started sharing some of my own DIY projects, around the house stories, fashion tips and other personal things on my blog and the feedback was great! When I really got serious about figuring out how to transform my creative juices into a viable service, I gave away 3 styling sessions to readers. From there, within 6 months I had enough clients to leave my corporate job and dedicate my full time career to my ultimate passion.

Where did the name come from? The LifeStyled Company refers to all aspects of your life. I really pride myself on living my own life and encouraging others to live a styled life. When I came up with the name I wanted to make sure it encompassed all of a person’s life, not just one or two components. I love so many elements of Styling and Design, I couldn’t dedicate my business to just a section of life! “Hand Curated Style to Live By” is my tagline and what works for me, and for you it could be something different.

Sounds super deep, right? It’s not, really. It just means that if I am going to allow something–anything–in my life, I want it to be curated by someone or to convey the purposeful and authentic nature by which you live.

What inspires you? Whose work inspires you? As sappy as this sounds; my girls, my family, my husband. The people who mean the most to me inspire me everyday. They remind me why I work so hard, why I strive to be far from ordinary. Why I remain committed to my craft and my creations. I also love me some Pinterest, as we all do! As far as whose work, I have so many people whom I admire….mostly via Instagram-stalking! I admire and feel inspired by people who live their life and craft honestly, in showing humility and failure. You can’t possibly be amazing at every single thing you do, can you?

What drives your passion? There is this thing inside me that never sleeps. Yes, NEVER sleeps. And in turn I probably don’t sleep all that well myself! I am so passionate about women, mothers, business owners, creators, people who are authentically happy …do you see a pattern here? I want to be better than I was yesterday. I want to be more knowledgeable. I want to be an example of what anyone can strive to become. In keeping that passion alive a lot of what drives it is personal growth, business growth and experiences.  The most inspiring thing is getting to work with amazingly talented people who share that same level of passion with me, just in their own arenas.

Any trends out there right now that you love? Anything you love that you’d like to see become a trend? Golly, I am so in LOVE with design as a whole right now. When I work with clients, I want my designs to reflect their style, not my own. I love that you can mix modern and rustic elements together,or that you can have a coastal-inspired farmhouse in Arizona, if that’s what you want!

You know what I want to see become a trend–or more than a trend, to become more accepted? For people to feel free in their choices. If you make a design choice you don’t like, change it! So many clients I work with tell me that they purchased something (a lamp, a piece of furniture, a rug) and from the second they got it home, they hated it. Yet here we are 5 years later and it’s still there! Mark my words, there will NEVER be something in my home that I hate. Never! Sure, you can’t scrap everything at once, but you can work together with someone like me who can help you derive a plan to get you to where you want to be. I cannot stress the importance of feeling fulfilled with your home and your personal life. It’s life-changing, it really is.

What’s her ultimate dream design or styling project?

Kristen says: “I think I have two dream projects….

1. Purchase a real fixer-upper in the countryside someplace fabulous. I have this dream to have a farm–although I don’t know a thing about farming!–with tons of land, a lake and a gorgeous house that my husband and I will have “rehabbed” back to life.

2. Second dream project would be to be able to style kids’ spaces for deserving children. I’d love to create a foundation someday that will be able to provide a platform that can offer resources for kids who have a goal in mind, and just need a warm, comforting environment to strive in. Feeling fulfilled with your space is so important for your mind, your inner thoughts, your heart, everything! If I could give children a space that inspired them from a young age and taught them the importance of a constructive and supportive environment, I would truly feel as if I left my mark while I was here.

What do you love about owning your own business? Flexibility. I love that I can make my own schedule and be around for things that are important to me. Don’t get me wrong though, I do not think owning a business is for everyone. It gets lonely! It is STRESSFUL. Where you may think that your bosses create a major amount of the stress in your life you may have by working for the man, you really just exchange those stresses for another. Specifically in a creative business, it can be tough making my brain work in “creative” mode when it’s supposed to! Things aren’t always black and white but running a successful business requires many elements to be tactical, aka, black and white.

Still, in addition to the flexibility, I get to live out my creative passion–my dreams, really. I always knew I would work for myself and I always knew it was going to be in a creative space. I can honestly say I pinch myself almost every day.

What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of the business? Juggling it all. I am a one woman show. I might not be a multi-million dollar mogul someday but I will always be a mom and a business owner and a creative  junkie!

What is something you have learned in the business that you didn’t expect? I was totally unprepared for how hard it would be to accept less than shining feedback. When you are in a creative business that is fueled by your own thoughts, ideas and designs it is very personal, no matter how businesslike you might try to keep things. I live my life very openly as well so many of my clients cross into becoming friends. When I first started out and a client shared anything but infatuation with the design I created for them, I literally felt ill! I would worry myself into a tizzy about if they liked me or wanted to work with me, etc. Now I know that all things are a work in progress and the styling process truly works best when the client can collaborate with me by sharing their honest feedback. It’s really not personal. Everyone communicates differently, and I try to take comments in stride and head back to the drawing board, without letting myself get upset or dive into the large pool of creative self-reflection! It’s dangerous in there!

Do you have a favorite design or style tip for us? In the most general way, allow your personal style to show in your home. Somehow. If you and your partner don’t share the same style, figure out a way –or call me!–so that you can both be seen in the space. Acknoledging, understanding and embracing the way you feel about the space you spend most of your life is so important. If you feel about your space like you do about some of the pins on Pinterest, I guarantee you will be happier overall. Also, don’t overcomplicate things. Design is basic with very few rules–if any! If you want it, let’s make it happen.
