How did you get started in the world of interior design? As a teenager, I always surrounded myself with beautiful things.  I grew up in a family that owned and operated furniture stores, so it has always been in my blood.  Finally, as an adult, I decided to go back to school and pursue a degree in interior design.

Kerry’s Inspiration? It’s All Around!

“Having traveled the US, I feel fortunate to live in a city that has a design community that is very tight knit; consequently, when I am surrounded by other creative individuals, I get very inspired.”

What was the inspiration behind your Portman White Design vignette? I took inspiration for the Portman White event from the Alhambra, a palace and fortress located in Granada, Spain.  The shape of the palace’s horseshoe arches and the intricate designs inspired by the “Almohad sebka” (the typical grid of rhombuses) create a sharp contrast with the white of the plaster walls and the dark wood.  Mr. Portman said “once you see the Alhambra, you never get it out of your mind.” I wanted to be inspired by something that also inspired him, so I took the palace image that I really loved and gave it a modern twist.

Which vendors and products did you go with to complement this iconic white look? Any favorite pieces in this vignette? The Alhambra is lavish in details, from the exquisite arabesques to the carved woods and the splendid gardens that surround it, which inspired the green accent within my Portman White vignette design.  Using a beautiful Currey & Co. chandelier, I added a traditional element to the space, which is typical of KMH design.  I sought out vendors that I do a lot of business with, to support them as they support me in my design efforts.  Some of my favorite pieces in the design are the gold leaf tabouret poufs from Worlds Away. They add a little fun and whimsy to the design…much like my personality!

Designing with white can be the ultimate challenge! What are some tips or hints to keep in mind when designing in an all-or-mostly white palette? As an interior designer, I like to keep neutral palettes throughout my designs. It allows me to add a layer of color that brings life to my designs.  Also, keeping a neutral palette helps to open the space up and gives the illusion of a larger space.

Kerry’s Advice? Seek the Unique!

“When I was growing up, I used to hear people say, ‘every room needs a black accent,’ but today, I believe every room needs a thrift find.  It creates a great conversation in any designed space!”

Kerry on visiting AmericasMart Atlanta

“While shopping at market do your homework and know exactly what you are looking for, because you could spend the entire day just on one of the many floors.  AmericasMart has two big shows, in January and July…always a great time to spend three or four days shopping for what’s new & now!”

REstyleSOURCE Loves Local!

We are all about all about ‘loving local’—from designers and manufacturers right down to brick & mortar shops and eateries! What are some of your favorite local shops and restaurants to visit when you’re in Atlanta?

smOne of my favorite brick and mortar stores is Steve McKenzie’s, located in West Midtown.  Steve is an amazing artist who along with his wife Jill have created an eclectic mix of new and found items that help to complete any design you may be working on.

sufisWhen dining in Atlanta, we are so fortunate to have so many great restaurants, but I am a sucker for Persian food, and Sufi’s has the most amazing Persian food around.  The hummus is absolutely delicious!
