Interview with Ann Huff & Meg Harrington of Huff Harrington

Introducing the fourth in our summer series of Designer Spotlights focusing on the group of top design experts who will be featured this July at AmericasMart’s Vignette Exhibition…Ann Huff and Meg Harrington! As the owners of Huff Harrington, these antique-loving Francophiles bring their impeccable eye to every offering in their Atlanta store and every design project they take on. REstyleSOURCE recently chatted with this talented team, in a brief Q&A which will not only give our readers some background on their “retail meets design” philosophy, but also what they can expect to see from the pair’s Designer Vignette at AmericasMart Atlanta in July 2016…


What does “retail meets design” mean to you?

Retail and design collide in the most wonderful way on a daily business at Huff Harrington Home. Most important, we design our retail space as if it were a home.  We try to make each vignette inviting, welcoming and stylish but also realistic. Nothing makes us happier than having a client tell us that a Huff Harrington Home vignette inspired them to go home and recreate something similar in their home.  It really makes us feel like a part of their family.

Which came first for you, retail or design?

Happily for us, when retail and design meet, they become the same thing. We’ve found that the best sales tool is a beautiful and enticing space that inspires our clients’ own interior design needs. Design has become an integral part of our retail business so the lines are very blurred –in the best way possible.

What inspires your creativity? Is there anyone whose work inspires you?

There are too many to mention, but we’re lucky that Atlanta is such a hotbed of creativity that we have plenty of favorite designers and architects right in our own back yard. We are also addicted to many magazines, such as Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, Elle Décor, and the French magazines Coté Sud and Elle Décor France. But our biggest inspiration comes from our travels to France: From strolling the streets and taking in the stunning architecture to visiting museums, design shows, retail stores and flea markets. Even some of the flower shops in Paris ooze style and inspiration!

HH previewDesigner Notes: Inspiration

“We’re a little obsessed with indoor/outdoor rooms and thought it would be fun to use an “orangerie” theme. Instead of bringing the outdoors in, orangeries let you bring the inside out. It’s truly the best of both worlds. Being French-centric, we love mixing styles and incorporating a design juxtaposition. So we mixed some crunchy treasures from the past with sleek modern comforts from the present. And because we are gallerists, no space is ever complete without art, so interesting abstracts ramp up the ‘wow’ factor here. In the end, we wanted an elegant but peaceful environment made for daydreaming – and a quiet joie de vivre.”

We’re all about ‘loving local’—from designers and manufacturers right down to local brick & mortar shops and eateries! What are some of your favorite local shops and restaurants to visit when you’re in Atlanta?

We are lucky to live here, and love the BeltLine and all the restaurants that are populating that area, such as Brezza Cucina, BeetleCat, Two Urban Licks and Ladybird. We swear that Bocado has the best burgers in town! And we’re so excited that the wildly successful Superica is opening up in Buckhead! And as far as other stores are concerned, nothing is prettier for babies than B. Braithwaite, we love the linens from Gramercy (seen at left) and we couldn’t live without Pike!

Designer Notes: Three Guidelines from Huff Harrington

1. Buy what you love and it will work in your space. Tastes and trends come and go but when you have a piece of furniture or painting you’re passionate about, you’ll always find a spot for it.

2. Every room needs an antique. No ifs, ands or buts.

3. It’s all about the mix. Embrace it.

Coffee or Tea? M & A: Hands-down, coffee (actually no-fat latte with extra foam everyday at 10 a.m.!)  /  Salty or Sweet? M: Salty. And I know what Ann’s going to say… A: Both – together!!  /  Beach or Mountains? M: Beach; Ann: I grew up in Switzerland and love anything above the tree line!  /  Cats or Dogs? M: Cats. I have three. A: Dogs. I have one who has the energy of three!   /  City or Country? M: City. Especially Paris, London, New York or L.A.; A: Any walkable city. There’s nothing nicer.


Text or Phone Call? M & A: Text please. We are retailers!  /  Night Owl or Early Riser? M: Early. A: Both! The candle burns at both ends.  /  Read the Book or See the Movie? M: Both but maybe not in that order; A: Both, book first.  /  Kindle or Hardcover? M: I’m sad to say I’ve become a Kindle addict because it makes buying books so darn easy. I do love hardcovers though; A: iPhone 6! I’m sad to say that I don’t even need a Kindle anymore.  /  Luxury Hotel or Camping Trip? M & A: Now we’re talking! Luxury please, all the way!  /  Home Cooked Meal or Fancy Restaurant? M: Love them both; A: I think Uber Eats may be the best of both worlds!
