Dash of Darling

Dash of Darling Phoenix, AZ

Interview with Caitlin Lindquist of Dash of Darling

As the voice behind Dash of Darling, one of the most popular fashion & style blogs in Phoenix, Caitlin Lindquist–sometimes literally–wears many hats! She’s a law school graduate, an Instagram inspiration, an unapologetic wearer of bold prints and delicate lace, a recent transplant to Phoenix, an advocate for women, and the down-to-earth style maven next door. Caitlin recently shared with REstyleSOURCE her style inspirations, a few of her favorite things about Phoenix, and most importantly, how to add that certain special “dash of darling” to everyday living.

How did you get started in the blogging world? I started my blog while in my third year of law school as a much-needed creative outlet for my passion for all things fashion. Since then, it has grown into a wonderful community of those I now consider friends, and has become something that I chose to tackle as a full-time project.

So, where did the name come from? My style is always evolving and changing and I love to experiment with my personal style, but one thing has always remained constant: I love to add in a “dash of darling.” Whether I am feeling bohemian, edgy or minimal… you’ll always find a bit of feminine flair in my style!

What inspires you? I tend to draw inspiration from everywhere – from the weather to my music and mood, to my fellow fashion bloggers and stylish pals on Pinterest and Instagram, and of course the designers themselves!

But if I were to have to pick just one person whose style has truly inspired me, I would have to say that I love Diane Von Furstenberg. Not only are her timeless designs iconic, yet on-trend and always so playful, but she as a person also inspires me to be the best woman I can be. DVF wholeheartedly supports Vital Voices, a global network of women that believes what I believe: that all women are strong and only need be given the tools and resources they need to be successful on their own. Diane Von Furstenberg helps to empower women around the globe and I hope to do the same through my voice and my blog.

“We are all unique and have something unique to bring to the table…measuring yourself on someone else’s yardstick won’t do anyone any good.”

Any trends out there right now that you love? Right now I am loving all of the suede and fringe I am seeing everywhere, from IRO to Valentino. I love conjuring the spirit of that carefree 70s bohemian vibe for an effortlessly chic look.

What do you love about connecting with people via the platform of your blog? Blogging has given me the ability to create my own creative space to share myself with others and hopefully inspire them – whether it be helping them put an outfit together or giving them a little confidence to do something they may not have otherwise done – like mixing those bold prints or even starting their own blog. It has also forced me to get outside of my box a little bit.

Ever since starting my blog I have developed a passion for photography, which has given me a reason to try new things and search out new places that I might not have done before. For instance, while on vacation my husband and I now make it a point to wake up and get out the door before sunrise to photograph the beautiful scenery or visit popular spots before they get too crowded.

A Dash of Darling Day in Phoenix

Caitlin says, “If I were planning a perfect day around Phoenix, I would definitely start off with a really great early morning workout or hike and some great music to dance around to while I get ready.  After that, coffee would be a must–and some yummy crepes at a darling café would be my on my wish list cause I have a major sweet tooth! From there, I love walking around and exploring my favorite local clothing boutiques. After a break for lunch, I also love some good home décor and entertaining shopping. To finish off my shopping I would probably make a pit stop into a sweet local flower shop for some pretty blooms to brighten up our home.”

Want to see Phoenix through Caitlin’s eyes? Stay tuned for a day trip around town hitting all the highlights on Caitlin’s list–and she had TONS of local favorites for us to choose from–coming soon to REstyleSOURCE!

What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of running a successful blog? The first challenge has been to not let the business of blogging interfere with the creative aspect. As time has gone by, it’s sometimes easy to lose sight of the whole reason I started Dash of Darling in the first place, which was to be creative! Sometimes I might get caught up with the need to produce new content and might not really feel truly inspired, and I have to remind myself that quality is much more important than quantity. When in doubt, I just go back to the basics and produce something that I love… chances are, my readers will love it, too.

Second challenge…it can be easy to begin comparing yourselves to others. It’s a competitive field with new blogs popping up by the second, but I find it helps to remind myself that everyone’s journey is different – because we are all different–and success rarely comes overnight! It takes hard work, dedication, and a positive attitude to stay afloat.

And lastly, another major challenge for me has been social media. In today’s world, you cannot run a successful blog without a presence in social media. While I try to keep my readers up to date on the daily happenings in my life, I mostly end up forgetting to snap the pic and post before it’s too late. I have had to learn to accept that that’s ok… because it means I am busy living my own life for me!

Caitlin’s Tips for a Darling Life?

DD1Style

Always wear something you feel comfortable and confident in. It can be as simple as a long maxi and bare feet.

DD2Entertaining

Remember, the hostess sets the tone! If you are running around like a mad woman and giving off a stressed out vibe, your guests won’t feel like they can relax, either. Try to focus on exuding an energy that is inviting and shows people how happy you are to have them there!

DD3Everything Else

Do three things a day you’re scared of. I took this advice from a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt, changing it slightly from one thing a day to three things, to force myself to get out of my own comfort zone and try new things.
