NO VODKA, NO KETCHUP, NO KIDDING

WRITTEN BY JAIMEE ROSE  *  PHOTOS BY JENNIFER YOUNG AND COURTESY OF CRAFT & COMMERCE

The first thing you need to know about Craft & Commerce is that there will be no vodka, and there will be no ketchup, and there are good reasons why not. (Vodka has no flavor, and ketchup ruins the flavor of whatever it is put upon, they say.)  But there will be fried pickles, fried chicken and cocktails that come in a giant punch bowl with teacups to serve all of your friends. That is brilliance enough.

TO DRINK

Craft & Commerce is dedicated to serving things the staff believes are good. At the bar, this means servers in suspenders and bow ties mixing old-school craft drinks — sans vodka, of course. But they will flame your citrus zest with a match. They will clap the herbs in their hands to release essential oils. You will witness cocktail voodoo magic, to devastating effect.
A bloody mary means gin and tequila. The ruby slipper is a mix of champagne, strawberry, lemon and Genever. The Kentucky riviera means bourbon, creme de cacao, lemon and peach bitters.

ON THE MENU

For dinner, if you can get past fried chicken and fried pickles, and we recommend you first try both, there’s a burrata salad with berries and a hamburger you’ll remember awhile.
Also, the sweet potato fries have crumbled cheese on top.
Even the environs are inspiring: there’s a brick wall with “demand less” carved out of brick, graffiti-covered tufted banquettes, and a funky chalkboard border that circles the room.
Dessert means an ice cream sandwich with candied bacon on top, and we can promise this: you will be demanding so much more.
