Coastal Coronado by Burnham Design

Seaside Sophistication

As the weather takes a turn for sunnier days ahead…we can’t help dreaming of the beach! The REstyle team has been fantasizing about every detail of this comfortably elegant beachhouse by LA-based Burnham Design, a vacation home for a large family that was also featured in 2014 as the Coastal Living Showhouse. From soaring ceilings and an open floor plan to outdoor spaces with a view that makes the most of its waterfront location, this home is a coastal dream come true. It helps that it also features tons of luxurious upholstered pieces by one of our favorites, LEE Industries! We checked in with lead designer Betsy Burnham for details…read on for behind-the-scene notes from the designer herself, and even more visual inspiration. Love her fresh, unique style? I am crazy about the palette. We kept it very clean and limited: navy blue and periwinkle with white. Wood finishes were either driftwood grey or black. It’s coastal-inspired, but I think the stark contrast keeps it sophisticated.

Since all three rooms–living, dining and kitchen–are open to each other, we first needed to define each space. We did this with changes in ceiling heights and treatments (using tongue & groove construction and shallow coffers), window treatments (from Roman shades to tailored drapery panels) and a creative furniture plan. Then, all of our paint colors and materials had to work together, as if it were one large room.

It was important to us, even in a beach/vacation house, not to fall into the realm of kitsch. So, while we borrowed color and used inspiration from nature, we tried to keep the design elevated and luxe as opposed to cute and beachy.

Right outside those French doors is the coast and the ocean, and that was all the inspiration I needed.

In terms of furniture pieces, I absolutely love that sofa. It’s by Lee Industries and I use it often because the clean lines and simple design fit into any decor – from traditional to eclectic.

Sometimes, simple lines and a clean color scheme are all it takes.

This home is full of gorgeous furnishings around every corner, including a variety of upholstered pieces from Lee Industries, and side table and dining table by The Old Wood Company. Window treatments are by Teresa Prater, with drape fabric by Manuel Canovas and Roman shade fabric by Pindler. Coffee table accessories and basket are from High Street Market, and fabric balls and box on table are vintage finds.
