Circus Bedroom By Holly Mathis

Fun Guest Room for the GrandKids

Holly Mathis Interiors’ clients in The Woodlands, Texas, wanted a space in their home where their visiting grandchildren would feel welcome and have fun.  Inspired by color and vintage toys, the homeowners and Holly worked  together to create a beautiful but fun space full of whimsy. Choosing to look locally for her treasures, the lovely chest of drawers and pair of lamps were found at Laurie’s Home Furnishings, not far from Holly’s design studio. Vintage paint by number circus themed prints once hung in the homeowners’ nursery as a child and she remembers them with fondness.  Luckily, Holly was able to find a colorful fabric that works wonderful with the prints but isn’t too juvenile or child-specific.  Only the vintage books, toys and art make the room a kid space.

Awkward windows made it difficult to space the beds on the primary wall in the room so Holly used yards of the Cornwall fabric to make the windows appear larger and give a backdrop of fabric.  This made it possible to put the twin beds on the main wall and makes a dramatic and colorful focal point for the room. Don’t let awkward window placement or sizes keep you from using a wall for your beds and or focal point.

While her background is in Museum Studies and History, Holly Mathis fell into interior design in 2005 when Better Homes & Gardens featured her little cottage. She feels blessed to be able to design for her clients and have time for her family.
