Cardamom Hot Chocolate

A Winter’s Day Treat

Contributed by Offbeat+Inspired

We love this recipe for a sophisticated take on a classic cup of hot cocoa. Sara from Offbeat + Inspired was inspired to create this recipe thinking about all of the snow days that she had as a kid, and how her mother would always make her and her brother a cup of hot chocolate after they had spent all day playing in the snow. Hot, sweet, and delicious, it was not only a treat, but also the perfect thing to perk them right up. There’s just something comforting about hot chocolate that immediately bring you back to childhood days, and leaves you feeling warm and toasty. Surprise your family and holiday guests with that same feeling, all wrapped up in this neat little cardamom hot chocolate recipe. The unexpected flavors of cardamom and vanilla bean and sure to be a staple every time you make hot cocoa from now on! Full recipe and instructions below.

Cardamom Hot Chocolate
Recipe type: Drink
  • 3 cardamom pods
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 200g good quality dark chocolate, broken into chunks (I used 100g 71% cacao and 100g 85% cacao)
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  1. Remove the cardamom seeds from their pods. Add cardamom seeds, milk, chocolate and sugar to a saucepan.
  2. Heat the mixture over low heat, stirring constantly until the chocolate is melted, the milk is hot (but not boiling!) and the mixture is smooth.
  3. Strain the hot chocolate to get rid of the cardamom seeds. (If you want to skip this task, use a spice bag to hold the cardamom seeds and then simply remove the spice bag when the hot chocolate is ready.)
  4. Pour hot chocolate into mugs. Top with vanilla bean whipped cream (recipe below), crushed pistachios and a pinch of salt (optional, but so delicious!)
