Brocante Home Irvington, VA

Interview with Rachel Pugliese

When did you open your store?
RP: I’ve been at Brocante Home’s Irvington location for eight years and in Richmond for one and a half. My husband Frank and I opened the Richmond location because we already had many customers who had homes in both places.

How did you get started in the business?
RP: This is a second career for me. I retired from a corporate position and moved to our weekend home on the Northern Neck of VA (near the Chesapeake Bay) from Washington, DC.

What do you love about owning the shop?
RP: The small town atmosphere of Irvington is what attracted me to that location. My husband Frank and I also loved searching for antiques and we decided to combine the two.

What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of the business?
RP: As with most shopkeepers, trying to be ahead of the curve in ordering for each season. Irvington is very seasonal as lots of the residents are part-timers from Richmond, VA or Washington, DC so I have to do my ordering sometimes six months in advance.

What is your favorite entertaining or design tip?
RP: I’ve learned a lot about scale since opening the shop – so I would have to say that most people are afraid to “scale” up, but often a few larger items looks better than many small ones.

Do you have any favorite pieces in the store right now?
RP: I love the look of white-washed wood and linen.

Do you have any special client stories you would like to share?
RP: I love to hear about what my customers have painted with Chalk Paint®!

Is there anything in particular that your shop is known for?
RP: My shop is known for it’s casual French look.

What items are your best sellers?
RP: Chalk Paint® is a huge seller in both locations. I also sell lots of linen curtains and modern lamps and other accessories.

What drives your passion?
RP: I enjoy the interaction with customers and searching for products.

What is the importance of customer service?
RP: This really is a service industry and so important since customers are used to the big stores and online shopping.

Do you have a favorite customer story?
RP: I have a customer who was painting her son and daughter in-laws kitchen.  When she told her two year old grand-daughter that they were going to “buff” the furniture, the grand-daughter took off all her clothes to help! Guess she thought you had to be in the buff to buff!

Are there any restaurants or shops in the area that you like to visit?
RP: Since we live on the water, my favorite meals are the ones we have at our home, but I love to go to Merrior for fresh oysters!

Are there any other tidbits you would like for us to include in this feature?
RP: Our customer favorite is the “shop girl” our cat Greta! Customers always ask where she is.
