Interview with Designer Becki Owens

Interior designer Becki Owens is never one to back down from a challenge. For this hard-working designer, blogger, mother of four and all-around style maker, challenge is a daily routine, with the need to come up with new ideas and inspiration always looming overhead. Becki combats this challenge with her innate ability to bring together textured bohemian elements like the perfect pop of color or pattern with more modern pieces, creating elegant, cohesive spaces that beg to be lived in. Becki took a moment to chat with REstyleSOURCE and tell us how she got started down her creative path, and how she keeps going and finds inspiration in such a busy lifestyle.

How did you get started in the world of interior design—and now lifestyle blogging, as well? When I was little, my father owned a paint store, remodeled and built homes. I used to go with him to work, and even then I loved mixing colors and was intrigued by design.  Later, those interests led to my love for interior design.  As far as having a lifestyle blog, I never planned on it.  As I starting sharing my inspirations and designs via Instagram, I realized I needed a place to give more details and resources about my work. Also, I have always had a love of fashion and so my blog has evolved into a reflection of my love for fashion and interiors as a whole. It’s been a great creative outlet and a lot of fun.

What’s your ultimate, dream styling project? I think it would be fun to design a boutique hotel in a smaller resort town like Park City, Utah. I would love to design with different styles and find unique pieces that I don’t normally work with.

Coming up with fresh new ideas is a lot of daily hard work, but it’s also very satisfying when I feel like I’ve helped or inspired someone.

What inspires you? Whose work inspires you? I love beautiful textiles. A unique rug or print can be the inspiration for one of my designs. I love Kelly Wearstler, Peter Dunham, and John Robshaw fabrics, just to name a few.

Any trends out there right now that you love? Anything you love that you’d like to see BECOME a trend? I love seeing bohemian elements mixed in with modern or mid-century pieces to create an eclectic look.  This trend creates such interesting spaces that have the look of someone who has spent time traveling and collecting.  Right now I’m seeing some great fashion and interior inspiration coming out of Australia. They have amazing bohemian clothing and inspirations for interiors, like layered hanging plants in living spaces.  I would love to see more of these trends come closer to home.

Becki’s Perfect Day in Orange County?

becki owens circle“The perfect day for me would start with sleeping in! Then, I would visit some of my favorite local stores like Juxtaposition Home or Molly Wood for amazing plants and take my time looking around.

I would love to meet my husband for lunch and end the day at the beach with a bonfire, roasting hot dogs with my kids…sounds dreamy.”

What do you love about running your own business? I love having a place where I can channel my creative side. I get to do what I love in my spare time, all the time.  Running my own business also gives me the flexibility to still do my most important job, being a mom to my 4 children. It’s important to me to be the first face they see when they walk in the door from school. I also love the challenge of coming up with fresh new interior design ideas, and great content for my blog and social media. I’ve loved connecting with people through sharing my work. It’s fun to come up with great new inspirations for such supportive friends and followers.

What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of running a design business? What I love doing is sometimes also the most challenging part of running my own business.  Coming up with fresh new ideas is a lot of daily hard work, but it’s also very satisfying when I feel like I’ve helped or inspired someone.

I get to do what I love in my spare time, all the time.

Any favorite entertaining/design/style tips for us? I love using unexpected pops of color in my designs.  You may notice I usually start with a white/neutral palette, but I like to keep my designs bright and fresh with great textiles and colors. I also think a great piece of art can make all the difference in a space.

Becki’s Favorite Quote

journeyBecki says, “I recently posted this quote on my Instagram. It’s a good daily reminder to me, and really gives me perspective.”

Sometimes we become too focused on the finish line,  we fail to find joy in the journey.
