Interview with Erin, Owner of Audrey’s

When did you open your store?  April 29th, 2011.

How did you get started in the business? I’ve always liked to make and create, reuse, recycle – it was just time as my kids were getting older to do something besides being Mom.

What sets your business apart from online shopping? Customers shopping in our store get personal attention, and if they need help with color mixing or techniques as an example to paint their furniture, we provide hands on experience for them.

Tell us about your team members. My daughters Alexa and Ali helped me start my store, and still continue to work with me now. I have Cheryl who works for me everyday and is my right hand, and Katie who works with us part time. We have a great team; it’s always a blast working with any of them!

“I LOVE to help people get inspired. Whether that means picking out something for their home, teaching them how to create with Chalk Paint® or just listen to them as they find their own ah ha moment.”

-Erin, on what she loves about owning her shop

Do you have any favorite pieces in the store right now? All my favorites get sold as soon as I get them painted!

What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of the business? As a single Mom, it’s difficult to be both Mom and a small business owner. To implement all the fun plans I have for the store and feel the tug to be at home too (even though my kids are in college) is definitely a challenge for me!

Is there anything in particular that your shop is known for? I’d like to think that besides being a stockist for Annie Sloan Chalk Paint®, we are known for our desire to have a happy clean store where people can come in and get a great something at a great price!

What is something you have learned in the business that you didn’t expect?  Not everyone treats others in the way they would like to be treated. I’m continually amazed by this.

What items are your best sellers? Chalk Paint® of course is our number one seller right now. We also sell lots of repurposed furniture & candles!

What drives your passion? My continuing desire to create!!

What is the importance of customer service to you? The consumer has many places in which to spend their hard earned money, so I feel it is extremely important for them to know we value them and will do most anything (within reason) to help them get the products and/or knowledge they need.

Do you have a favorite customer story?  The best are just when the customers come in and tell me how beautiful or cute or good the store looks or smells and that they can feel good energy inside. That makes me feel like I’m where I’m supposed to be, doing what I should be doing.

“My favorite is of a woman named Diane who took my paint class so she could paint her cabinets. She was so thrilled and happy that she could do something that looked so difficult. When she comes back in she is always happy to report how she loves her kitchen now! And she shared her pictures with me so we could put them on our website.”

-Erin, on one of her fondest client memories.
