Atlanta City Guide from In Honor of Design

Charming Local Picks

With only 24 hours to spend in a city, you would think that you wouldn’t be able to fit very much into a day. However, for Anna Liesemeyer from In Honor of Design, an Atlanta city guide pro, she knows all of the best coffee shops and restaurants that are a must see (and a must taste!) for those who only have a short time window in the city. Read below for some of her favorite local shop and restaurant picks – and good luck making the very tough decision of where to shop and what to eat!

Alon’s Bakery & Market

A market, bakery, cafe, and restaurant all in one Parisian setting. Alon’s is a place I frequent more than most places around Atlanta. It offers indoor seating as well as plenty of outdoor space. If you may remember, Max arrived a few hours after our 5th anniversary dinner and this was the place we dined. I guess you can say I have sentimental ties to it (wink).

The pastry selection doesn’t hurt either. With plenty of healthy snack options and whole food groceries to pick up, you always have an excuse to stop in, which usually leads to a mocha and macarons. It’s just the way it has to be… If you stop for a visit, head to the bakery and ask for one of each cookie you see. I promise it’s worth the $6.00 you spend! And then maybe get a coffee to go and sit outside to enjoy the Atlanta sun in the morning with a friend. Or take your date for dinner Thank you to Haley Sheffield for photographing this space and for enjoying a visit with me!

Anticos Pizza

I have been to Italy three times in my life. I have been chasing the taste of their gnocchi, gelato, wine, and pizza since. Nothing can really ever quite capture the tastes of Italy, but I can tell you one thing….Anticos comes pretty close. To the point where you want to cry because it smells like the real deal. You want to high five the pizza makers over their tossing skills. And you feel like you might faint once the first bite hits your mouth….

Wood fire grill stoves, not many English speakers, fine ingredient options…I loved every bit of it. Its tucked away on a corner, but its well known. It was my first experience on a Tuesday night, but it was packed. I ordered the Margherita D.O.P. pizza in honor of one of my favorite pizza experiences ever in Italy. It didn’t disappoint.

I feel inclined to go back to taste the rest of the pizzas on the list….someone stop me. No don’t..

Add Anticos to your list of must visits in Atlanta! Happy Weekend ahead…go discover your city!

Cafe Gio

Right next door to Anticos Pizza is this happy place. Owned by the same people, but run in a separate environment. Its somewhat hidden until you walk behind Anticos. My heart lit up when I read the sign…..GELATERIA. We all know what that means, and need we know more? I wanted to run through the doors which surely would have resulted in me distractedly tripping over the beautiful vespas on the way….

alons-pic1

PHOTO: Chelsey Heidorn Photography

Caffé Gio’s had a window case full of options to choose from. The only drawback being you can’t pre-sample before you decide! (What horror for the indecisive soul….like me.) I eenie meanie mine moed, and decided on some chocolate chip number which I did not regret as soon as the first spoonful entered my mouth.

I would hit up this spot just for the pink and white striped awnings and fun atmosphere…even if there gelato was not a part of the bribe factor.

All in all, between Anticos and Caffé Gio, you may not ever want to venture to try anything else to eat … ever.

Cafe Intermezzo

I cant believe I haven’t shared this spot with you all yet. By far, one of the best places in Atlanta to grab dessert and coffee? Cafe Intermezzo. I might be a bit biased though since this place is where we went after I got engaged:) You know I am all about atmosphere and this place has quite the touch indoors and outdoors with an Austrian look and feel, candle lighting and string lights, and things like wooden telephone booths….

cafeintermezzo-pic1

PHOTO: Haley Sheffield

They serve lunch and dinner (which never disappoints), but I would say their coffee and desserts are their strong suit. The drink menu is a mini pamphlet of all the things you dream of. Butterscotch lattes, Irish coffees, deluxe hot chocolate….you name it, they serve it. And serve it well.

Also appreciated is the fact they have good music going at all times. Like I said….ambiance. I met my friend Haley Sheffield here for the best nutella mochas you might ever try in your life, and she so kindly took these photos for me to share with you! It is right around the corner from Alon’s Bakery so maybe make an evening of it! I am going to give you a little homework. Find out what the word whip cream sounds like in german. It will make you giggle.

Calypso St. Barth

My sister Jana is in town visiting, which means day trips and exploring whenever we get the chance. She appreciates finding new places as much as I do which makes it all the more exciting. We headed down to Westside Provisions and had the best afternoon.

calypso-pic1

Calypso St. Barth so kindly invited me to check out their space there which has was a sight to behold. A bunch of natural light, modern fixtures, and of course racks of beautiful clothes and accessories. Their spring collection is a perfect mix of silks and soft cotton pieces in both classic colors, and fun prints. This navy dress had me wanting to head to the nearest coast as fast as I could pack my bags. The whole atmosphere of the afternoon was such a nice experience. (And the gals who work there are so kind!) If you are in the area, stop in and see for yourself!

Henry & June Boutique

I only had to hear two words: coffee and clothes…   A brilliant concept really don’t you think??

henry-june--pic2

Meet Henry & June, a brand new boutique/cafe in the East side of Atlanta. Owned and operated by the lovely couple pictured above.

I was smitten over the white brick walls and urban vibe. A wall of vintage cameras?! Hanging neon signs? I ate it up.Being somewhat of a coffee junkie, I was more than happy to find out they provided La Crema straight from the heart of Nashville. (Favorite stop in Nashville for coffee.) I knew they take this coffee thing seriously too:)

“”We ethically source coffees by building meaningful and equitable relationships with farmers, mills, and close partners. With deep respect for farmer and land, we seek coffees with notable flavor, balance, and sweetness. Our coffees are directly traceable to the farm and mills where they were produced.”

henry-june--pic1

After you grab a coffee meander through the store and look closely at their careful collection of designers. and high quality men and women’s fashion that cannot be found elsewhere in Atlanta!

Thankful for businesses like Henry & June who add life and personality to this great city. Head over and see for yourself!

Jeni’s Ice Cream

It’s been so crazy around here that I haven’t had a chance to post a local notes feature in a while! Back when my sister was visiting we hit up Westside Provisions. (Remember Calypso St. Barth and Seed Factory?) We also made a stop at the famous Jeni’s Splendid Ice cream which lived up to the hype and more. I am thankful its a hike to get there or otherwise I would surely grow summer saddles purely from ice cream.

I have a weak spot for this place because it was started in my homeland of OH and has an ice cream flavor dedicated to it!

jenis-pic1

If you are traveling through Atlanta, Jeni’s is worth your stop over. But make sure to leave a twenty minute time span to decide on what flavor to choose. Thankfully, they have the taste test option….crucial for people like me who take ice cream flavor choosing super seriously. And out of state? Don’t worry, you can order online!!

Enjoy!

Julianna’s Crepes

We heard through the grapevine that Julianna’s had the best crepes in Atlanta, so I felt it absolutely necessary to go and taste this rumor for myself. Tucked away in a side street in Inman Park, Atlanta, this quaint cafe is straight out of a movie. In fact, I had my “You’ve Got Mail” moment when I saw the ivy mailboxes, and could almost hear the soundtrack playing in the background. Top it off by a people watching red table in the front and you got me for good.

julianas-pic1

I loved that you could watch them make their famous crepes right behind the counter. I of course had to try “The Almighty”….nutella and strawberry filled crepes. Its as large as a slice of pizza for only $6, and it tastes better than gourmet. It’s definately a plus when an eatery shows friendly customer service as well. Such a nice crew that worked there. Add Julianna’s to your list of musts for your next Atlanta visit my friends!

julianas-pic2

I sat outside and decided I could easily sit there all morning, forget about the time, and get lost in the pre-fall air over a good book….maybe even a good novel.

Chelsey has been such a great comrade to explore Atlanta with and she captures the essence and feel of a place with perfection. We hope to continue this series and keep touring you around this great city!

Provisions for Home

Remember that French cafe I showed you a few weeks ago? Well this is the shop around the corner I promised I would show you. It is owned and managed by the same couple. How cool is it that a husband and wife get to own shops around the corner from each other? What I appreciate about them is that they are knowledgeable about their product. In the cafe, every french cheese can be named and every coffee flavor can be described. It’s the same in this quaint shop for the home. Every piece has a story. Whether it is handmade by the owner herself or re-purposed from a local market, every item is unique. I was completely smitten. They kindly let me take these photos to share with you.

Roswell Provisions

To start, one of the most noteworthy spots I have yet to visit …Roswell Provisions. Every single detail in this little French cafe is worthy of notice. The owner is originally from France and used this space as both a place to enjoy a strong cup of coffee or to shop a unique spread of meat, cheeses, and wine. Wooden tables and window benches, produce cart, and a pastry bar are just a few of the characteristics that bring this place so much charm.
The outdoor seating area provides the perfect people watching spot facing the quaint streets of downtown Roswell. Gabe and I visited this morning for a perfect morning on the cushioned seats to enjoy some uninterrupted conversation over a strong cup (and decaf cup) of the house roast. I hope you get the chance to visit this place when you are in the area!

Salt Factory Pub

No matter how many health documentaries I watch or articles I read, I can’t every quit french fries and a good burger. I almost always order it over numerous other menu choices. Chelsey told me about Salt Pub Factory and that I might like the look and feel of this place. Well, it won on all fronts. Really cool vibe and the food has you dreaming about it for days.

Apparently Salt Pub Factory is right across from another favorite spot and I never even noticed till the last visit. It’s hard to spot unless you are looking for that red sign. We grabbed the corner booth in the back where you get the view of the whole pub:) Beautiful wood tables, modern light fixtures, wine walls make for an urban touch with a good ole’ pub type of experience. It’s a place that makes you want to stay a while.

salt-pic1

I ordered The Steakhouse and it actually went beyond my already high expectations. Gabe looked at me with shock over the fact that I actually consumed the entire plate in one sitting since I usually leave at least some for him. Gabe’s meal was equally delicious (because I had to try that too of course), and he savored every sip of the beer on tap. A good brew on tap is a must to get Gabe’s stamp of approval. He agrees we are going back for our next date.

I think we will become loyal visitors to this friendly joint. Such good people and a very fun atmosphere.
There are actually two locations (and I here one has outdoor Bocce Ball!) in Roswell and Alpharetta.

Seed Factory

On my last trip to Westside Provisions, I finally got to experience Seed Factory for the first time. I was already a geeky fan on instagram, so I should have expected nothing less from the store.

There is charm and whimsy oozing out of every corner. A modern twist to the imaginative play of childhood. I immediately wished Veronica was with me to experience it all. I was completely smitten with the design, decor, and of course, every single item they carry.

silk-pic1

Such a kind and warm team that works there as well. They really know how to make you feel at home. If you are in the Atlanta area, this store is a must visit. I picked up so many fun easter basket goodies for my little ones. Their products accommodate every age from birth to tween. And the good news is, if you aren’t in the area you can shop online and even create a registry.

I’ll let the photos do the rest of the talking. A must visit while you are in Atlanta!

Sprinkles

A cupcake ATM. You would think only Willy Wonka himself could concoct such a genius idea. The idea belongs to Candace Nelson who started the first Sprinkles Cupcakes in Beverly Hills. Long lines quickly formed and the Hollywood stars were among the devoted customers. Sprinkles can now be found in 12 locations nationwide with Atlanta being one of the lucky few.

sprinkles-pic1

What is so brilliant about Sprinkles is that their branding projects an experience that makes you feel like you have stepped into candyland for a moment in time. The inside is just as delightful with modern curves and bold colors and cut out pick up windows. It’s an experience you won’t soon forget. How can you resist the allure of bold colors and vivacious flavors? What you don’t expect is the cupcakes to actually taste fresh and unique, but oooohhhhhhh do they ever. I had bought this one for my kids to share but I admit I was fighting them for the crumbs.

Get yourself over to Lenox Mall quick!

Star Provisions

Enjoy the best Affogato coffee in the city served fresh in front of you probably by either a sweet man with a heavy Italian accent or one that will make you laugh and show you the latest in latte art….

star-pic1

PHOTO: Haley Sheffield Photography

The small walk in coffee joint is a part of a larger walk in pantry style cafe where you can get your freshly baked breads and sweets, shop for your kitchen among the myriad of market goods, or enjoy a lunch with friends over the large farm tables. Good luck trying to get out of there in under an hour;) Star Provisions is part of the greater Westside Provisions district where I send most Atlanta visitors, due to one of the best curation of food and shops Atlanta has to offer.

SugarBoo & Co.

White wooden floors and walls. That is all you need to know…

But I will tell you some other fun details about this incredible little storefront discovered by my friend Amarena. She warned me that when I walk in I might just not be able to process all of the greatness. It was true….

sugarboo-pic1

After breakfast at The Flying Buscuit (which is another story for another day), we escaped the rainy downpour and stepped into Wonderland….SugarBoo and Co. Every nook and cranny was filled with whimsy and charm as they promise. You would think it was a store filled with local artist products, but we come to find out the majority is actually all designed and created by the one and only SugarBoo Designs. Incredible.

sugarboo-pic3

From the textiles, to the stationary, children’s decor, animal busts, and that darling ampersand…..it put my heart at full speed pitter patter. So thankful to the very sweet gals behind this store for letting us share it with you all!

Head over to visit and take a look for yourself. I couldn’t show you everything because you will enjoy it more in person;)

Taproom Coffee

I have lived in Atlanta for several years now, and I am still discovering new places. Every area takes on it’s own character, and Kirkwood is no exception. An older part of Atlanta with old Victorian homes that give you heart eyes as you drive past their wrap around porches and three story windows. Sigh…

taproomcoffee-pic1

Tucked in a cobblestone shopping street is Taproom Coffee. I have yet to find a space that offers both a strong cup of joe and brew on tap. Something for morning, noon, and night! Pastries are made fresh by Mae’s Bakery if you need a little something with that latte. Taproom Coffee offers a very upbeat urban vibe with bold oranges and blues, hanging light pendants, and cement walls.

taproomcoffee-pic2

If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of trying Counter Culture Coffee, this is the place to try it. They use Bonmac drip cones to make sure an ounce of flavor is not lost in the process.

The Optimist

One of the best aspects of this Local Notes series is getting to experience my city. It has been a fun way to explore and look behind new doors. Luckily none have lead me down Alice’s rabbit hole, but rather, to beautiful spaces like The Optimist I loved every detail of this Oyster Bar. The light fixtures, the mod corner seating, the open layout, and even the center kitchen bars in view. I cannot wait to come back to this place with Gabe and actually order something off the menu! They were kind enough to let us in before they opened so we got a preview of just how captivating this space can really be…

theoptimist-pic1

I will have to get back to you on how the selection of food tastes, but I am guessing you can’t go wrong with hearth roasted Mahi Mahi or east coast oysters as options on the menu. I have developed a real bad hankering for sea food lately so it was a tease to be in there and not be able to order;)

Ready to book your date for the weekend? Or maybe hop on a plane to Atlanta to see this place? You will probably find me there looking up at the ceiling in wide eyed wonder because I can’t exactly get over their light fixtures…
